Gower Coast Walking & Hiking

Walking is one of the best ways to experience the Gower Peninsula. Coastal cliffs, sandy bays, wooded valleys, open commons and salt-marsh landscapes create routes ranging from short seaside strolls to demanding full-day hikes. Gower was the first area in Britain to be designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in 1956 and is now known as Gower National Landscape.

Highlights

– Gower Coast Path:  Follow around 38 miles (61 km) of coast from Mumbles to Crofty. The full route is best treated as a multi-day walk, but it can easily be enjoyed in shorter sections.

– Rhossili Down:  Climb above Rhossili Bay for wide views across the peninsula, Worm’s Head and the Bristol Channel. Choose a shorter summit route or make it part of a longer circular walk.

– Three Cliffs Bay: Walk through woodland, dunes and sandy tracks to one of Gower’s most distinctive bays, with views towards Pennard Castle and the three limestone peaks. Paths can be rough or slippery and beach sections require care around tides and currents.

– Pennard Castle and Three Cliffs: Combine historic castle ruins with dunes, woodland and coastal views. These routes are rewarding but include uneven and sandy terrain, so check the route details and conditions before setting out with younger children.

Experiences

Start with the kind of walk that suits your day. Swansea Bay and Mumbles offer gentler promenade and coastal sections, while routes around Oxwich, Three Cliffs Bay and Rhossili combine rougher paths, sand, woodland and cliff-top terrain.

Longer walkers can link sections of the Gower Coast Path for a full-day or multi-day route.

Photography lovers will find golden light and dramatic cliffs, while serious hikers can connect multiple trails for a full-day trek.

Local Tips

  • Check tide times whenever your route uses beaches, tidal causeways or low-level shoreline sections. Conditions can change quickly, and parts of the coast may become inaccessible at high tide. If you are unsure, use the higher route or turn back.
  • Check the weather before setting out and take extra care on exposed cliff-top sections. After heavy rain or storms, paths can be muddy and cliff edges may be unstable or slippery.
  • Wear footwear suited to the route and carry enough water and food for the distance. Walking boots are a good choice for rough, muddy or longer Gower routes, while easier Swansea Bay sections can be tackled in comfortable walking shoes.
  • Keep dogs under close control and use a lead around livestock, wildlife and exposed cliff edges. Check seasonal beach restrictions before including a beach section in your walk.
  • Reward yourself with a stop at a local pub — many trails finish near great spots for food and drink.
  • Download your route before setting off and do not rely solely on mobile reception. Some South Gower sections are remote and signal can be limited, so carrying a map or offline navigation is sensible.
